A Massachusetts man who stopped at the store for sugar also bought a lottery ticket — which ended up being worth $2,500 a week for life.
Alfred LaRoche, a carpenter from Amesbury, is the first person to win the lifelong prize from the new “$2,500 A Week For Life” scratch ticket game released on Feb. 18.
LaRoche chose the cash option on his prize and received a one-time payment of $2 million before taxes. He told the lottery he wants to build a new cottage with the winnings.
LaRoche said he bought the winning ticket because 19 is his lucky number, and the “$2,500 A Week For Life” game was number 19 in the book of tickets on display. He said the clerk rubbed the ticket “for good luck” before they handed it to him.
LaRoche bought his ticket at Black Duck Market & Deli at 12 Federal St. in Newbury, which will receive a $26,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
