The lottery player from Massachusetts who won a $10,000 a month for 10 years prize from a scratch ticket claimed his prize on Monday and received his first payment of $120,000, the Massachusetts State Lottery said.
Randy Whitney, of Spencer, came forward on Oct. 16, and claimed a winning “Decade of Dollars” $5 scratch ticket.
Whitney chose the annuity option for his prize, and received his first year of payment for a total of $120,000 before taxes. Beginning in October 2024, the Spencer man will receive monthly payments of $10,000 for the next nine years.
The lottery winner bough his winning ticket at Xpress Mart at 94 Main St. in his hometown. The store will receive a $12,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
There is just one grand prize of $10,000 a month for 10 years remaining to be claimed in the game. Whitney had the option of either claiming his prize in the annuity form, which would total $1.2 million after 10 years before taxes, or a one-time payment of $780,000 before taxes.
