Mass. man who went missing on Aug. 16 found dead underneath S.C. home, authorities say

A Massachusetts man’s body was found underneath a South Carolina home, a little over a week after he was reported missing.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said they went to a home in Sea Pines, a 5,000-acre gated community in South Carolina, in connection with suspicious activity around 11:30 a.m. Monday. Through an investigation, the body of a man was found underneath the home.

The South Carolina authorities said they believe the body is of Stanley Kotowski, 60, of Massachusetts. He was vacationing when he went missing from the South Sea Pines Drive area on Aug. 16 around 10:30 a.m.

He was last seen wearing a dark or gray, Coors Light T-shirt, dark shorts — possibly dark blue or black — and no shoes, the Beaufort County Sherrif’s Office said. He also didn’t leave with his phone or wallet.

“He just walked out the door,” Jackie Kotowski, Stanley Kotowski’s wife told WJCL 22 News. “He had really bad insomnia for about a month. He doesn’t have dementia. His anxiety just kept getting worse and worse and worse and he started to get a little paranoid.”

Kotowki’s body was found around 3:30 p.m. Monday and the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will do an autopsy on the body on Tuesday to determine the cause of death and positively identify the body, authorities said.
