Mass. man was speeding, driving under the influence when he hit car head-on, police say

Four people were injured in a crash in Chelmsford after police said a man was speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

A 35-year-old Lowell man, whose name was not released, was charged with three counts of OUI-liquor (resulting in serious injury and negligent operation), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speed greater than reasonable, marked lane violation, failure to inspect motor vehicle and failure to wear seatbelt.

At about 10:48 p.m. on Sept. 7, a gray Chevrolet Traverse and a gray Lincoln MKZ crashed at the intersection of Stedman Street and Waverly Avenue, according to the Chelmsford Police Department.

Police believe the Lincoln MKZ had been speeding when it crossed over the double yellow lines and crashed into the Chevrolet Traverse head-on. Police also believe the driver of the Lincoln MKZ had been drinking prior to the crash.

Both cars were significantly damaged and two people in the Chevrolet Traverse had to be rescued from the car by the fire department.

All four people involved in the crash were taken to the hospital with injuries.

The people in the Lincoln MKZ were not wearing their seatbelts, officials said.
