In the middle of the afternoon Thursday, the Northampton Police captain heard a woman screaming and ran out of the Center Street station.
The woman had been stabbed in the neck with needle nose pliers and was bleeding heavily around 2 p.m. near the corner of Masonic and Center streets.
As the police captain and another bystander helped the woman, other Good Samaritans jumped on and held down the man who stabbed her until another officer arrived to place him under arrest, according to Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan’s office.
Russell Scott Mayo, 41, of Ware, is expected to be arraigned in Northampton District Court Friday on charges of attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in violation of a protective order and two counts of violation of an abuse prevention order. The man and woman knew each other, officials said.

The woman was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Officials said as of Thursday night, she was in stable condition.
