Mass. man accused of setting off explosion has bail set at $10K during arraignment

A 50-year-old man appeared in court Thursday on charges filed in connection with an explosion at his home in Wareham, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office said in a statement.

Mark Halpin is charged with one count each of possession of explosives and secreting, throwing, launching, or placing of explosives. He was held on $10,000 cash bail, according to the statement.

If Halpin posts bail, he must wear a GPS monitor, remain in home confinement and not possess any weapons or incendiary devices.

Prosecutors had asked Halpin be detained, and later requested $75,000 cash bail.

On Oct. 3, Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and local first responders, went to a home on Aunt Maryville Lane for a report of an explosion.

Halpin was found spitting up blood, with burns to his upper body and cuts to his hands. The home had sustained damage consistent with an explosion, like broken windows, warped and melted appliances and scattered debris, according to the statement.

During a search of Halpin’s home, prosecutors say police found calcium fluoride, compressed air tanks, ammonium nitrate, and various powders and chemicals common in the manufacturing of explosives or fireworks. Halpin was arrested and held in custody on $15,000 bail.

Halpin has been in custody since his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 3.
