Mass. could see below-freezing temperatures this week before weekend warm-up

People are expected to wake up to some rather cold mornings this week.

Tuesday was off to a “chilly start” with temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s, while “a few areas in western New England have approached the freezing mark!” the National Weather Service wrote.

This came after a cold front moved offshore Tuesday. Conditions are expected to be dry but blustery with gusts between 20 to 25 mph, forecasters said. Highs should reach the lower to mid-50s.

Boston is expected to reach a high of 52 degrees, while several other cities should hit a high of 53, the National Weather Service said in a post on X. Worcester is expected to reach a high of 48 degrees, while Springfield should be one degree below that.

“Note that normal highs for today are around the mid-60s, so forecast highs are some 10 degrees colder than normal, and it will feel that way with the anticipated breeziness,” forecasters said.

Tuesday night is expected to be, albeit less windy, one of the coldest nights of the season so far, forecasters noted. Light winds should persist into Wednesday morning, leaving some areas in the 20s as another cold front comes in.

During the day, Wednesday should feel similar to Tuesday, with highs in the low to mid-50s, forecasters said. Wind gusts should reach 20 mph by mid-morning. Skies should be clear with full sunshine.

Cities like Boston and Worcester are expected to reach the same high temperatures on Thursday, forecasters said. Springfield is expected to see a high of 51.

Between Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures are anticipated to reach the freezing point north and west of Interstate 95, forecasters said. Communities in the east should hit lows in the high 30s, while coastal towns are expected to be at around 40 degrees.

“Would not be shocked to hear of a few spots in northern and western Massachusetts fall into the upper 20s,” forecasters said.

The chilly midweek is not expected to last long. An “anomalously” warm air mass is expected to be present going into the weekend and lingering through the first half of next week, forecasters said. Saturday and Sunday should see temperatures reach the 70s, with parts of Western Massachusetts seeing temperatures more in the high 60s.
