Mass. could see a window of hail, thunderstorms Thursday night before dry Friday

While the dry weather reprieve is set to continue going into the weekend and beyond, there might be a stormy pause on Thursday.

Low clouds and stratus were predominantly around the Cape and Islands before spreading out across parts of southern New England, according to the National Weather Service. They come as a cold front trails from Newburyport to Storrs, Connecticut, and into Danbury. Along this line, showers and embedded thunderstorms are expected.

Scattered showers with embedded thunderstorms are expected to move along the Interstate 95 corridor by around 7 p.m., forecasters said. These storms are expected to be less than severe, though pea-sized hail and lightning could occur, the National Weather Service said in a post on X.

“There hasn’t been much time for the atmosphere to destabilize, so … the paltry instability will keep these storms from reaching severe weather limits, but a few could still produce cloud-to-ground lightning and brief downpours,” forecasters continued.

Boston could see some isolated showers this afternoon, while Worcester and Springfield are expected to remain dry as skies clear up.

By 8 p.m., forecasters anticipate the cold front should push away any clouds and keep skies clear overnight. Winds between 10 and 15 mph with gusts between 20 to 25 mph are possible later in the evening. Temperatures should drop into the middle 50s and low 60s.

These dry conditions are expected to continue Friday and on through the weekend into Monday and Tuesday. Forecasters warned that skies on Friday could look hazy due to smoke from active wildfires in west-central Canada.

Highs on Friday should be in the low to mid-80s in the interior while temperatures should be 10 degrees cooler along the coast, forecasters said.

Early models show a low level of precipitation before Tuesday going into Wednesday, forecasters said. When that Tuesday to Wednesday timeline arrives, there’s a possibility for another round of showers and thunderstorms to start.
