Mass. board fires police sgt. who didn’t report rape allegations against ex-deputy chief

After an independent investigation, an emotional public hearing and several hours of painstaking decision-making, the Hopkinton Select Board recently voted to fire Sgt. Timothy Brennan over his failure to report rape allegations against the town’s former deputy police chief.

Brennan’s predicament stems from an investigation into ex-Deputy Chief John “Jay” Porter, who was indicted on child rape charges in the spring of 2023. Brennan has admitted that he learned of some of the allegations against Porter from the victim as far back as 2017 and never reported them to law enforcement.
