WEST SPRINGFIELD — Everything was batter with maple syrup here Saturday at Storrowton Village on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition.
Visitors were shown how early European settlers discovered how to make maple sugar from Native Americans during Maple Harvest Day. In addition to the history lesson, visitors enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes, sausage and, of course, maple syrup.
The open-hearth cooking demonstration featured maple apple bread, brown sugar maple-glazed bacon and sweet potatoes with maple glaze.
Visitors also toured the historic Gilbert Farmhouse, including the second floor which is open only once a year.
