A man shot and killed by police in New Hampshire was armed with a gun when he encountered police outside a Nashua hardware store on Sunday night, according to New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella and State Police Colonel Mark B. Hall.
The man, whose identity was not released pending his autopsy on Monday, encountered Nashua police at a Lowes home improvement store at 143 Daniel Webster Highway around 8:45 p.m. Sunday. Nashua police went to the area to follow up on a report from officers in Pelham of a resident there who was armed earlier Sunday, Formella and Hall said in a statement.
Nashua police came across the man outside the store, where he was armed with a gun. During the “ensuing encounter,” two police officers used “less-lethal munitions” and one officer fired their gun. Officers attempted to save the man’s life, but he died of his injuries, according to a statement from Formella and Hall.
No law enforcement officers were hurt and there is no threat to the public, officials said.
The identities of the police officers who used less-lethal and deadly force against the man will not be released until formal interviews take place sometime in the next five to 10 days, according to the statement.
The exact circumstances of the shooting remains under investigation, Formella and Hall said in the statement.
