Man found guilty of murder in estranged wife’s death from hammer attack in Mass. home in 2019

A jury has found a 47-year-old man guilty of breaking into his estranged wife’s North Adams home and attacking her with a hammer in 2019, causing her death from a brain injury five months later, according to the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office.

On Friday, Michael Cook Sr. was convicted of second-degree murder, armed assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and assault on a family or household member in Berkshire County Superior Court, the district attorney’s office said in a press release.

On the evening of July 11, 2019, Cook broke into the house of his estranged wife, 41-year-old Charli Cook, and hit her on the back of the head with a hammer as she lay in her bed, the district attorney’s office said. The attack caused a traumatic brain injury, and she died five months after the assault.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office found that Charli Cook died as a result of the hammer attack, the district attorney’s office said. Michael Cook is set to be sentenced on Thursday, Oct. 10 in Berkshire County Superior Court.
