A man drowned in Halifax on Sunday when the canoe he was in capsized, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz’s office.
Massachusetts State and Environmental Police, along with Halifax Police, are investigating the drowning, Cruz’s office wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Halifax police went to the area of a boat ramp on White Island Road shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday after receiving a 911 call reported a capsized canoe and several people in the water, NBC10 Boston reported, citing the Plymouth County district attorney’s office.
The district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for information sent Monday morning by MassLive.
First responders determined three people — an adult and two children — safely exited the water but another adult did not resurfaced, according to WCVB-TV.
Divers from the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Dive Team found the man around 12:40 p.m., the station reported. The man was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, where he was declared dead.
The man’s name was not released.
Halifax resident Julie Lang called the incident “absolutely crushing.”
“It’s hard to concentrate on other things. I don’t wish this on anyone,” Lang told WCVB-TV.
