WEST SPRINGFIELD ― West Springfield’s Majestic Theater is among 28 venues statewide receiving a share of $7 million in tax credits through Massachusetts’ new Live Theater Tax Credit Program, aimed at boosting live performance and tourism.
The new program aims to grow live theater in Massachusetts, help local stages and bring more visitors to the state, the Healey-Driscoll administration said in a statement.
The credit is part of the Mass Leads Act, a plan to create jobs and strengthen communities across the state. The program gives money help to professional theater companies that put on live shows.
Gov. Maura T. Healey said that live theater is a catalyst for creativity that is fueling downtowns, inspiring residents and drawing visitors from around the world.
“By investing in the people and places that bring stories to life, this new tax credit program positions Massachusetts as a national leader in live performance, a state where imagination drives opportunity and culture powers our economy,” Healey said.
The tax credit allows theater companies get back part of their costs — 35% of payroll and 25% of production and travel expenses. Companies can use the credits for up to five years or transfer them, a press release said.
Applications for the first year of the program ran from mid-July to late August. The 28 theaters chosen include local stages, national tours and shows preparing for Broadway.
