A New Year’s Day fire in a Main Street apartment in Falmouth quickly spread to other apartments and resulted in multiple injuries, according to officials.
Just before 6:40 p.m. Monday, the Falmouth Police Department wrote on Facebook that firefighters were battling a fire at 176 Main St. Pictures and video of the fire shared to social media showed heavy flames coming from the top of the building.
Falmouth Fire Chief Timothy Smith told reporters Monday night that the fire began in an apartment above the shops at the plaza. The fire damaged several apartments and resulted in injuries to multiple people, he said.
WCVB reported that two residents and a firefighter were treated for minor injuries, and that as many as five apartments were damaged. The people who were living in those apartments have been displaced.
Additionally, the news station reported that many of the ground floor businesses were damaged by the water and smoke. Businesses located below the apartments include Twigs gift shop, Sea Bags, Homespun Gardens and a seasonal restaurant called Pickle Jar Kitchen.
Investigators are still determining what caused the three-alarm fire, WCVB reported.
