Lost and injured, Mass. woman’s phone died as she tried calling for help while hiking

Officials had to find and rescue two hikers in New Hampshire after an injured Massachusetts woman’s phone died while talking to a 911 operator.

On May 25, two hikers notified officials that they were lost off of a trail at Rocky Branch Trailhead around 7:20 p.m. in Jackson, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game. Tara O’Shea, 51, of Middleton, Mass., was also injured, officials said.

The trail is considered a “challenging route” and typically takes more than 10 hours to complete, according to All Trails.

She was on the phone with the 911 operator when her phone battery died. This prevented any further communication, officials said.

At 9:38 p.m., Conservation Officers arrived at the Rocky Branch Trailhead and began hiking towards the coordinates received from 911. At 11:08 p.m., officers reached the two hikers. They all then made their way to the trailhead parking area, finally arriving at 12:40 a.m.

The 51-year-old was taken to Memorial Hospital in Conway for medical evaluation and treatment.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has previously warned to “always plan for the unexpected.”

“This incident is a good reminder to all people recreating in the outdoors to dress appropriately, hike with a partner or group, and carry the necessary equipment,” the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said. “Always plan for the unexpected.”

Recommended hiking equipment includes water, fire starter, whistle, headlamp, warm clothing and a map. For the full list, click here.
