Another cool day is on tap for Massachusetts on Wednesday, with the possibility of some scattered ocean-effect rain showers before a storm brings heavy, windswept rain on Thursday.
A steady, cool wind coming from the northeast will keep a layer of clouds in place for much of the day Wednesday, with temperatures peaking in the low to mid 50s. National Weather Service forecasters say they “can’t rule out” some ocean-effect showers, primarily near Interstate 95.
“Any showers are more likely to be widely scattered in coverage with light accumulation if any,” forecasters wrote.
Thursday brings a significant change from the weather pattern earlier this week, as a strong low-pressure system arrives, bringing with it widespread moderate to heavy rainfall across the region.
The rain is likely to arrive in the mid-afternoon to early evening on Thursday, though there is a chance for a few showers during the day. Rainfall will continue into Thursday night.
Most areas should see between 0.75 and 2 inches, with the potential for up to 3 inches in some parts of Southern New England. Cape Cod and the Islands are most likely to see totals between 1 and 2 inches or more.
“Given the progressive nature of this system, flash flooding is not likely, although some localized nuisance flooding in poor drainage/low-lying areas is possible,” forecasters wrote.
The heaviest rainfall should move out overnight, with a dry slot pushing into the region on Friday. Some showers are likely to linger during the day, but nothing significant.
Instead, the bigger concern on Friday is gusting winds, with speeds of 30 to 40 mph possible Friday afternoon and evening. The eastern slope of the Berkshires should see higher gusts, as could coastal areas like Cape Cod.
The risk of strong winds reduces on Saturday, but it will still be a breezy first day of November. The weekend should remain dry, with temperatures in the 50s. The next chance for rain arrives mid-week, likely on Tuesday or Wednesday.
