Editor’s Note

A Medway couple and their then-1-year-old son found themselves trapped in Gaza last fall as the Israel-Hamas War began. This article is Part 3 of a series of four stories about how they survived in a war zone and how the experience affects them to this day.

Wafaa Abuzayda spent nearly a month trapped in Gaza, along with her husband Abood Okal and 1-year-old son, Yousef — enduring airstrikes and limited access to food and water.

When she finally got home, even she didn’t know how much the sight of clean water would affect her.
