Last minute Christmas Eve drink run? Find out if liquor stores are open

If you ran out of time on Saturday to grab drinks or alcohol mix for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, you still have a window of time to get your beverages and more ahead of the holiday.

There are few restrictions when it comes to buying alcohol on Christmas Eve. On most other years, the only issue a buyer might face is checking the hours of their nearest liquor store.

But in 2023, Christmas Eve lands on a Sunday and in Massachusetts, there are limitations on the sale of alcohol on Sundays that buyers will want to consider.

According to Massachusetts’ “Blue Laws” — restrictions on which businesses can be open on Sundays or holidays — liquor sales are allowed as early as 11 a.m. and as late as 12:30 a.m., according to state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission. The change was made in 2014 when Gov. Deval Patrick signed a bill that made it possible to buy alcohol before noon in Massachusetts, Boston Magazine reported.

With this and the lead-up to the holiday in mind, it’s worth it to either call ahead to your nearest store that sells alcohol and see what their hours are or arrive after 11 a.m. and see if you can make your purchase.
