Kristaps Porzingis injury: Celtics center leaves Wizards game with heel pain

Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis left Sunday’s game against the Wizards with a foot injury. The starting big man appeared to tweak his foot after finishing an alley oop with just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter. Porzingis was subbed out of the game just over a minute later and was later ruled questionable by the team to return during halftime. Luke Kornet started the second half at center in place of Porzingis with Al Horford (rest) already sitting out Sunday’s contest.

Porzingis was putting together was one of his best games of the season against his former team prior to the injury. In 11 minutes, Porzingis was 5-of-6 from the field scoring 11 points while helping Boston build a double-digit lead on the road.

It had been a relatively smooth ride for Porzingis on the floor this season after his surprise early return from offseason leg surgery. Porzingis had appeared in six games entering Sunday’s game, averaging 20.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while being handed his usual minutes load (28.8 per game) almost immediately. Porzingis did tweak his ankle during Saturday’s loss against the Grizzlies but was able to return in the game.

The good news for the Celtics is that Porzingis will get a lengthy break after Sunday night to rest the injury. The Celtics don’t return to the court until playing Chicago back in Boston on Thursday night.
