Kenley Jansen (heart) won’t travel with Red Sox to Colorado; team will play short

LOS ANGELES — Because of heart issues that have been triggered by altitude in the past, Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen won’t travel with the team for their upcoming three-game series with the Rockies in Denver. As a result, the Red Sox will play a man short.

Jansen has dealt with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) since 2011 and underwent procedures for the condition in both 2012 and 2018. He said Sunday that he has needed to have his heart shocked in 2012, 2018 and 2022 after pitching at Coors Field, which sits 5,200 feet above sea level. Two years ago while pitching for the Braves, he made two appearances in Denver in early June that contributed to him being placed on the injured list with an irregular heartbeat at the end of the month. It was determined before the season that he would not accompany the Red Sox there for their first series in the city since 2019.
