Karen Read trial: Cross-examination continues with contentious witness

Testimony in the trial of Karen Read, a Mansfield woman charged in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, continues Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Read, 44, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of O’Keefe, who was found cold to the touch and unresponsive on Jan. 29, 2022, outside of a home in Canton.

Norfolk County prosecutors say Read struck O’Keefe with her SUV while driving intoxicated. Read’s attorney, David Yannetti, said during the trial’s opening statements that her car never struck O’Keefe and that others are to blame for his death.

The trial is taking place in Dedham’s Norfolk County Superior Court.

On Friday, Jen McCabe took the witness stand. She was a friend of O’Keefe and was at the Waterfall Bar & Grille in Canton with friends, including O’Keefe and Read, before going to 34 Fairview Road after midnight on Jan. 29, 2022.

McCabe was also with Read and another witness, Kerry Roberts, when they found O’Keefe’s body on the front lawn of the Canton home later that morning.

Jurors witnessed a contentious cross-examination on Tuesday between McCabe and Read’s attorney Alan Jackson.

Under intense questioning by Jackson, McCabe told him, “You’re spinning all of this.”

Jackson’s line of questioning sought to show inconsistencies in her testimony before a Norfolk County grand jury and during trial on Friday. She admitted that she never told a grand jury that Read said “I hit him, I hit him, I hit him,” but she stated that last week.

On Tuesday, McCabe admitted to driving to the house of a Canton police investigator the day after O’Keefe’s body was found.

Cross-examination of McCabe is expected to continue Wednesday.

This story will be updated throughout Wednesday when testimony continues at 9:00 a.m.
