Jurors return to Dedham’s Norfolk County Superior Court to continue deliberations in the trial of Karen Read, a Mansfield woman charged in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe.
Closing arguments took place on Tuesday and jurors later in the afternoon without reaching a decision.
All 12 deliberating jurors must agree on whether prosecutors met that burden. The evidence must convince jurors of the defendant’s guilt to a “reasonable and moral certainty,” Presiding Judge Beverly Cannone said on Tuesday.
Here is a recap of the closing arguments.
Read, 44, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of O’Keefe, who was found cold to the touch and unresponsive on Jan. 29, 2022, outside of a home in Canton.
Norfolk County prosecutors say Read struck O’Keefe with her SUV while driving intoxicated. Read’s attorney, David Yannetti, said during the trial’s opening statements that her car never struck O’Keefe and that others are to blame for his death.
