The New England Patriots lost Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills to a quarterback in Josh Allen who had zero healthy hands by the end of the day.
Allen, who is in the midst of an MVP-caliber season, has reportedly been playing all season with a fractured left hand. Then in the fourth quarter Sunday, he appeared to have issues with his right hand.
Allen could be seen holding his right hand after being tackled by Patriots defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. After that point, Allen appeared to have issues holding the ball.
After the game, Allen revealed to CBS’ Evan Washburn that he lost feeling in his hand after the hit.
“Fell down, got a helmet to the funny bone,” Allen said. “I went to throw the next one, and I had no feeling in the hand. Came out a little wobbly. That’ll happen sometimes, but we move on.”
The “funny bone” is another name for the ulnar nerve, which runs along the arm.
Allen said that it took him about “5-10 minutes” to get feeling back in his hand. He noted that, if there had been a quick change of possession, he wouldn’t have been able to come back out.
Fortunately for Allen, Buffalo held the lead at that point in the game and didn’t have to throw the ball much. The Bills closed things out after recovering an onside kick from the Patriots and running out the clock on the final drive.
The Bills improved to 12-3 with the win. Meanwhile, the Patriots fell to 3-12.
“It was pretty challenging. Any time you play a division opponent, they’re gonna have a good plan for you. The ugly ones count the same as the pretty ones. Glad we can get out here and get a W and get out of this cold.”
