Joe Mazzulla reveals he prays using beads made from old Garden court

While Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has dealt with the criticism, he won’t be hearing much anymore after he led the C’s to their 18th championship. The second-year coach was thrust into an awkward position, but he’s had plenty of success in the past two seasons, including the 2024 championship.

Mazzulla has had his quirks, which have made the headlines over the past season. But he’s connected well with his players as they’ve praised the coaching staff all season. After winning the title, Mazzulla joined “The Lowe Post” to reveal a special item he holds every day that’s also a nod to the Celtics’ successful franchise history.

“My assistant, Kara (Keena), also works for the team,” Mazzulla said. “She knows what’s important to me and my faith and she got the old parquet from the Garden and made rosemary beads out of it. So every day I get to the Garden, I get to my prayer circle and I use those rosemary beads. Obviously there’s a religious component there, but it’s made from the wood.”

Mazzulla has talked at length about what his faith means to him and his family. So it’s not surprising to hear he has some special items, though the details about the old Garden court are impressive. And it’s clear Mazzulla has embraced what it means to be the head coach of the Celtics, which he’s also talked about with appreciation over the past two years.

“Having that with you, knowing what the people have gone through before us, coaches, players, front office, everybody involved,” Mazzulla said. “It was just a sense of connectivity to the Celtics history and a sense of connectivity to my faith. I carry those with me everywhere I go, and I bring them out for home games. So I’m really grateful for that gift.”
