Patriots long snapper Joe Cardona is pretty certain he knows the identity of Bill Belichick’s favorite college football team.
It’s Navy by a landslide.
In wake of Saturday’s Army-Navy game at Gillette Stadium, Cardona was a guest on MassLive’s “Eye on Foxborough” podcast. As a graduate of the Naval Academy, and Lieutenant in the Naval reserves, Cardona offered plenty of thoughts on the upcoming game, as well as the bond he shares with Belichick.

“I’ve been able to talk with Coach Bill a good amount about Navy football throughout my time here,” said Cardona. “But I think there’s no question who his college team is. He spent a lot of time in that program. We definitely take a lot of pride in our Annapolis ties.
Belichick’s father Steve served as an assistant football coach for 34 years, so the Patriots head coach spent a lot of time there learning and apprenticing under his dad.
“When it comes down to it, his family has had such a big impact on Navy football for all of the years that Coach Steve Belichick coached Navy football. He coached every single one of my mentors, to put it simply,” said Cardona. “Everybody who’s brought me up, the Navy football players that have gone before me, Coach Steve Belichick had an impact on their development.”
Cardona plans on being in attendance, and Belichick who is expected to speak to Navy’s football team on Friday night before Saturday’s game, will no doubt be there rooting on the Midshipmen as well.
Said Cardona: “I know his coaching tree extends far into college football, with the connections with Coach Saban and various programs around college football, but I can say with 100 percent certainty that I know Coach Belichick is a Navy football fan.”
The historic Army-Navy showdown will kickoff at 3 p.m. EST.
