JFK, cookies and a haven for hippies: The wild history of a lost Mass. landmark

In the little town of Whitman, just south of Boston, there’s a parking lot between a Wendy’s and a Walgreens with a curious sign.

It’s a large white wooden board that features a colonial bellman and the number “1709.” From a distance, it doesn’t look like much.
