Jerod Mayo: If Drake Maye proves better than Jacoby Brissett, he’ll start

FOXBOROUGH – Jacoby Brissett, who has played well throughout training camp, didn’t have his best day at the office against the Philadelphia Eagles in Thursday night’s exhibition loss.

He threw a bad pick in the end zone in the first quarter, and wasn’t especially sharp running the offense.

Understudy Drake Maye, on the other hand, made some plays as he handled the offense in the second and third quarters of the 14-13 loss. With Maye under center, the Patriots produced two scoring drives.

The rookie went 6-for-11 for 47 yards, and scampered for a touchdown. Even while being sacked once, the young quarterback effectively used his legs throughout.

In the aftermath of the performance, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo was asked about Maye’s ability to overcome some obstacles around him, and if the offensive line would be an “impediment” in considering the rookie as the team’s starter.

Mayo tossed aside the notion, saying the state of the offensive line wouldn’t be a factor if Maye ultimately outplayed Brissett.

“If Drake beats out Jacoby, he earned that role,” Mayo said. “And we don’t really take (the offensive line) into consideration when he’s ready ready to go … if he’s better than Jacoby, then he’ll play; he’ll start.”

While Maye had his best showing, there were still issues with fumbled snaps. But he’s made progress.

“I thought he went out there and did a lot of good things,” Mayo said of the team’s third overall pick in the 2024 draft. “Hopefully he can build on that and we’ll see how this week goes.”
