After a 1-4 start and back-to-back blowout losses, there was some chatter about whether Bill Belichick was nearing the end as Patriots coach.
There’s plenty of blame to go around for New England’s woes, but James White doesn’t see the franchise moving on from the coach who helped bring six Super Bowl titles to Foxborough, Mass.
On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” the three-time Super Bowl champion and former Patriots captain joined MassLive’s Karen Guregian and discussed why he doesn’t think the Patriots will move on from Belichick at the end of the season.

“I don’t think it will be after this season or anything like that. Like I said, it’s uncharted territory for this fan base for 20-plus years. So obviously they get beat down two weeks in a row, you’re 1-4. That’s what happens when you’re losing football games,” White said. “People bring everything to the forefront. They’re blaming Bill, they’re blaming Mac, blaming the entire offense. They just find someone to put the whole blame on when everybody is pretty much accountable for what’s going on. So I’d be highly surprised if a coaching change is made after this year. I mean, Bill has done so much for the organization. He’s won so many football games, I think it’s kind of a respect thing. I think obviously he himself has to do a better job of finding ways to get the guys in that can execute what he’s trying to get accomplished.
“So maybe that’s shuffling the roster, a little bit more active this upcoming season or shuffling the roster up. I’m sure after the season he’s gonna try and figure out how he can get the best football product out there for the 2024 season,” he added. “You have three seasons of somewhat disappointment for an owner who’s used to being in the playoffs, being the Super Bowl and being in contention. And our fan base is used to all that, they’ve been, quote unquote, spoiled for so long. They want to see their team competing and competing hard, not getting beat down and whatnot.
“I know everybody’s ready to mail it in after five weeks, but there’s plenty of teams in the AFC still trying to figure themselves out including teams within the division,” White concluded. “The Bills, the Dolphins — they’re trying to figure themselves out too. Teams in the AFC North — they’re trying to figure themselves out with injuries, all that stuff. There’s a lot that can happen. They can turn things around again, win these next three games and you look back and, you don’t forget everything that happened early on, but you can have a little bit of a better feeling. That’s a big if that offense can figure things out very quickly.”
The Patriots can begin to figure things out and get back on track on Sunday when they play the Las Vegas Raiders.
