Jaguars acquiring Mac Jones caught QB ‘off guard’

While Trevor Lawrence knew his job was safe after the Jacksonville Jaguars acquired Mac Jones from the New England Patriots in March, the same couldn’t be said for C.J. Beathard.

Beathard has been Jacksonville’s backup quarterback for the last three seasons and appeared to continue that trend in 2024. But then the Jags traded for Jones, which appeared to knock Beathard down on the depth chart.

“I was caught off guard by it, but at the end of the day in this business, you can’t really be caught off guard by anything. I’ve been in it for eight years and I’ve seen some crazy stuff go on,” Beathard told First Coast News’ Shaaz Peerani. “I just learned to stay in my lane and do what I can do. Don’t focus on the outside stuff.”

While Jones will get a fresh start after his last two seasons in New England were tumultuous, he’s not guaranteed to be the Jags’ backup.

The former Patriots quarterback did show some promise when Jones made his preseason debut and went 9-for-11 for 98 yards in Jacksonville’s 26-13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

While Jones’ time in New England didn’t end on a high note, he’s enjoying his time “just being Mac” with his new team.
