An international graduate student at Tufts University was detained by federal authorities outside an off-campus apartment Tuesday evening, the university’s president said in an email.
The student, Rumeysa Ozturk, is a Turkish national, according to a federal court filing. She is studying child study and human development at Tufts and is set to complete her program this year, according to an op-ed she co-authored in the university’s student newspaper.
Ozturk’s LinkedIn page appeared to have been taken down. A lawyer representing Ozturk, Mahsa Khanbabai, filed a petition in federal court challenging her detainment. The filing is not publicly available because it has to do with immigration. The petition names officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security as defendants.
