Injured Boston Red Sox rookie still has not begun baseball activities

SAN DIEGO — Red Sox rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer (sprained right wrist) has not yet begun baseball activities.

Boston placed the 22-year-old on the 15-day injured list July 25. He received an anti-inflammation injection Aug. 2, which usually takes 72 hours to take full effect. The plan was to see how he felt after three days and then begin baseball activities if the injection worked.

But Mayer still has not begun hitting, throwing or fielding. He’s just working out at this point.

Surgery is an option but Mayer continues to try to push through it.

The 22-year-old Mayer has gone 29-for-127 (.228) with a .272 on-base percentage, .402 slugging percentage, four home runs, eight doubles, one triple, 10 RBIs, 20 runs, eight walks and 41 strikeouts in 44 games. He was 8-for-27 (.296) in nine games before landing on the IL.

Other injury updates

~ Reliever Luis Guerrero (right elbow strain) threw a bullpen session in Fort Myers on Friday. “Everything went well,” Cora said. “Don’t know about the schedule but he’s getting ready. He’s getting there.”

~ Setup man Justin Slaten (shoulder) will throw two more bullpens next week. He threw bullpens Tuesday and Friday.

He hasn’t pitched since May 28. He posted a 3.47 ERA, four holds, three saves and a .171 batting average against in 24 outings before landing on the IL June 1 with what was described as “right shoulder inflammation.”

Slaten later found out through imaging that his transverse process/bone was pressing and pinching against nerves and blood vessels. Rest and correcting posture helped calm it down.
