‘Iconic’ Mass. sports apparel company bought out by New York competitor

One of the most famous names in Boston sports apparel has been bought out.

Last week, New Era Cap announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire Massachusetts-based sports apparel brand ‘47, which is best known for its hats and for running the Red Sox team store outside Fenway Park on Jersey Street.

New Era, which is based out of Buffalo, New York, is the on-field hat provider for Major League Baseball — as well as the NFL and NBA. Meanwhile, ‘47 produces officially licensed apparel for MLB, NFL, MLB and other major sports leagues.

Originally founded as Twins Enterprise in Boston by twin brothers Henry and Arthur D’Angelo, the company later changed its name to ‘47 Brand and then to simply ‘47 in honor of the year it was founded. The company is currently headquartered in Westwood.

Ownership of ‘47 was passed down from the D’Angelo twins to Arthur D’Angelo’s four sons. Arthur D’Angelo, known as the “Mayor of Fenway” was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2018. He died in March 2024 at the age of 97.

“Today’s announcement marks a major milestone for ’47 and is a testament to all we have achieved over the last 75+ years in growing from a single street cart outside Fenway Park to a successful business and premier sports lifestyle brand,” ‘47 president Dominic Farrell said in a statement.

According to the announcement by New Era, both companies “will continue to serve consumers independently,” with Farrell continuing to head up ‘47.

“We are pleased to have reached this agreement to acquire ’47, a company that shares our commitment to making iconic products and delivering premium experiences,” New Era CEO Christopher Koch said in a statement. “We have known and respected the D’Angelo family and the ’47 team for many years and have tremendous respect for the business they have built. Our two companies have a shared history, having begun as family businesses dating back generations and transforming through passion and hard work into globally recognized brands.”

The deal is expected to close by the end of the year, New Era announced.
