Ice skating, lights & shopping: What to do at this Boston-area winter festival

A winter wonderland with several seasonal activities has taken over a large park in the Boston area.

Hood Park in Charlestown has been transformed into Winter Fest, which will be present until Jan. 25, 2025.

Spanning more than two acres, the outdoor winter festival features multiple cold weather happenings.

Upon entry, visitors are greeted by massive light displays including Winter Fest’s signature Ice Castle. The castle, which makes for an ideal photo opportunity, is located near the ice skating rink that surrounds a 32-foot Christmas tree.

Skating is $20 per hour for adults and $15 per hour for children under age 10. People can either bring their own skates or pay $10 to rent a pair.

Those looking for a cozier vibe can rent out one of the gondolas in the après ski-themed lounge. The gondolas are available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis, so visitors can put their names on the waitlist once they arrive. The gondolas fit up to four people and cost $15 for every 30 minutes they are rented.

Of course, there are other indoor areas that are free of charge. They include the Polar Lounge and Bent Water Beer Garden where guests can warm up with a drink or snack. Food options include holiday cookies, grilled cheeses and soft pretzels. Visitors can also sip on a specialty hot chocolate, beer or wine, among other beverage options.

Winter Fest is also incredibly family-friendly. Families can pay $18 to experience the toy workshop inside the life-sized gingerbread house. Santa will also make appearances throughout Winter Fest.

Visitors can also shop for holiday gifts at the Artisan Village all while holiday music plays throughout the festival.

Entry into Winter Fest is free. The festival is located at 100 Hood Park Dr., Boston. Information about tickets, hours and parking can be found online.
