‘I feel horrible.’ Kings star apologizes for foul that injured Jayson Tatum

Domantas Sabonis says he feels “horrible” about the play that sidelined Celtics star Jayson Tatum with an ankle injury.

Tatum left Monday night’s game in Sacramento with an injury after landing awkwardly on Sabonis’ foot on a jumpshot. Officials hit Sabonis with a Flagrant 1 foul, ruling that the Kings star put his feet in Tatum’s landing area.

Sabonis, who has been working his way back from an ankle injury himself, issued an apology after the game.

“I feel horrible. I’ve had a crazy month myself, personally,” Sabonis said, referring to his injury. “You never want that to happen, so I apologize.”

Boston won the game, 113-95. However, the focus afterwards was the health of the Celtics’ superstar

Coach Joe Mazzulla was peppered with questions about Tatum’s status. However, the team didn’t have much in terms of specific updates.

“He seems to be doing ok,” Mazzulla told reporters. “He’s just icing it right now. I didn’t see the play but they made the right call, flagrant foul. We were fortunate he was able to shoot the free throw. He’s taking care of it right now.”

The Celtics are off Tuesday before heading to Phoenix to take on the Suns. Boston is set to release an injury report Tuesday, at which point we’ll get an update on Tatum’s condition.
