Human remains found on Nantucket by men looking for deer antlers

Human remains were found on Nantucket earlier this week by men who were looking for deer antlers, according to authorities.

Central dispatch at the Nantucket Police Department received a call about human remains found near the east end of the island shortly before 5:10 p.m. Thursday. Two men who were in the area looking for antlers shed by deer discovered the remains, the department said in a statement.

Patrol officers, detectives and Massachusetts State Police responded and found the remains in the dense woodland off Milestone Road, according to the statement.

The scene was secured and processed, and evidence was collected, the statement said. The remains were then removed and transferred to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the department said.

The cause of death of the person whose remains were found is unknown at this time and is under investigation by the department’s detective unit, according to the department.
