How urban forests will keep Boston cool – and more healthy

In the city of Boston, there are approximately 43,711 trees on publicly owned land. An estimated 60% of Boston’s trees are on private property, bringing the total to well over 100,000 trees within city limits.

While that may seem like a lot of trees for an urban environment, they are not distributed evenly throughout Boston, creating heat islands in areas where there are fewer trees. The city and local environmental groups hope to change that.
