How small is too small? Springfield councilor proposes minimum apartment size requirement

SPRINGFIELD — A city councilor is proposing a regulation requiring new apartments measure a minimum of 550 square feet, saying the community not only needs more housing, it needs livable housing as well.

There is currently no minimum requirement for the size of apartments, and some developers have come forward with proposals that call for affordable efficiency apartments that measure as little as 275 square feet, said City Councilor Sean Curran.
