Hospital care is moving back into people’s homes — and may stay there

In 1876, Springfield’s Dr. Pierre LeBreton Stickney gave a speech to the Massachusetts Medical Society about the value of a country doctor.

By treating patients inside their homes, and often many generations of one family, a country doctor is a “friend, comforter and adviser,” he said, one who “learns to know his people — even better than they know themselves.”
