Holyoke shooting suspect surrendered after getting help from friends, hiding in hotel, officials say

A third suspect in a Holyoke shooting that killed an infant and injured a pregnant woman surrendered to authorities Friday.

Kermith Alvarez, 28, of Holyoke, was wanted in connection with the shooting that broke out near a bus with an expecting mother on it. A bullet hit the mother and the baby had to be delivered. However, officials said, the baby died.

Alvarez had friends that helped transport him after being treated for a gunshot wound on Oct. 4, investigators claim. And he had been on the run since.

Jose Galarza, 31, and Jay Marie Rosado-Rosario, 29, both of Holyoke were charged with accessory after the fact – murder.

Investigators were able to get phone records that showed communications from Galarza’s phone to Alvarez and that they had evidence that Alvarez evaded police on scooter and foot based on information fed by Galarza, according to Prosecutor Kerry Koehler.

“The call records, we argue, support that he was receiving information about where any potential risks of being noticed were and that Galarza was the person communicating through the cell phone number law enforcement had associated with him to assist Mr. Alvarez to evade capture,” Koehler said.

The couple also helped Alvarez leave Massachusetts by using their information to book a room at an Economy Inn in East Hartford, investigators found according to Koehler.

Two men have already been charged with murder.

On Oct. 6, Johnluis Sanchez, 30, of Holyoke, was arraigned by Zoom in Holyoke District Court for is suspected involvement in the shooting. His bail was revoked on an open firearms case out of Holyoke District Court, and he was held without the right to bail on a charge of murder for his alleged involvement in this case. Other charges are expected to follow.

A day earlier, Alejandro Ramos, 22, also of Holyoke, was arraigned on a charge of murder in Holyoke District Court in connection with his alleged role in the shooting. He is being held without the right to bail.

They are both expected to appear in court Friday. Alvarez is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Holyoke District Court.

“All involved suspects are believed to have been identified and are now in custody,” the Hampden District Attorney’s office said.
