Heat, humidity return to Mass. on Thursday. Here’s how hot it could get

National Weather Service forecasters set down a heat advisory for much of Massachusetts on Thursday as the Bay State prepares for a stretch of “very warm and humid” weather that will push temperatures up to or even over 90 degrees.

There is little chance the state will see any rain on Thursday, with forecasters putting the odds at 10% to 15%. Heat indexes, or the “feels like” temperature, are expected to hit the mid-90s on Thursday afternoon, prompting forecasters to issue a heat advisory for much of the eastern part of the state. The advisory stretches west along the Mass. Pike, with communities generally situated below the highway set to experience higher temperatures than those above it in the central and western parts of the state.

The heat advisory is in place until 7 p.m. on Friday, warning residents of those areas to “drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”

“Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing,” forecasters wrote. “Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.”

In Boston, the forecasted high temperature on Thursday is 93 degrees. In Central Massachusetts, Worcester is projected to reach 92 degrees on Thursday. And in the western part of the state, Springfield’s forecast calls for a high of 93 degrees.

It will be slightly cooler in The Berkshires on Thursday, with the forecast calling for a high of 87 degrees for Pittsfield. On the opposite end of the state, Barnstable, on Cape Cod, is also projected to reach 87 degrees on Thursday.

Friday’s forecast is much the same — hot, humid and dry, according to forecasters. But there is a chance scattered showers roll into Western Massachusetts later Friday afternoon.

Unsettled weather drifts into the state this weekend, with more heat and humidity mixed with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
