GREENFIELD – Before streaming services upended the movie business, there was a set of unspoken rules that governed Hollywood’s yearly release schedule: summer was for tentpole blockbusters, the holiday season was for heavyweight Oscar hopefuls, and January was a burying ground for undesirable films. Now, when most new releases can be accessed via the click of a button and enjoyed from the privacy of your own sofa, there’s even less incentive to suit up for a frigid drive to the local multiplex in the heart of a New England winter.
Issac and Angela Mass, co-owners of Greenfield Garden Cinemas, are keeping the audiences coming and, on Jan. 3, they’ll be launching the Clint Eastwood Film Festival, which will feature a total of 60 films starring and/or directed by Eastwood before concluding on Feb. 6.
For readers unfamiliar with his formidable oeuvre, Clinton Eastwood Jr. is an actor, director, producer, composer, and former mayor of Carmel, California. He received his first acting credit during President Eisenhower’s first term and released his 40th directorial effort in 2024, at 94 years old. From Spaghetti Westerns to Orangutan Buddy Comedies, there are few genres untouched by Eastwood, making him the perfect candidate for a massive retrospective chronicling eight decades of work.
