Great-grandmother from Mass. wins $1 million lottery prize 5 days after retiring

A great-grandmother from Massachusetts who won $1 million came forward to claim her prize just five days after she retired, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Susan Maxwell, from Arlington, came forward to claim her $1 million prize on Oct. 6. She’d been playing the “$15,000,000 Money Maker” scratch ticket game, which now has two $1 million prizes remaining to be claimed as of Oct. 16.

Maxwell had fully retired just five days prior on Oct. 1, and she told the lottery she hadn’t retired because of the lottery win, but because “it was just time.”

The great-grandmother chose to receive the prize in the form of a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes. She told the lottery she plans to use some of her winnings to help her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The store where Maxwell bought her ticket, called Arlington Convenience and located at 245 Massachusetts Ave., will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
