Fundraiser held for Springfield officer who was shot in the head

The Springfield Police Department is currently holding a fundraiser for their officer Nestor Santos, who was shot in the head and leg.

Santos, a seven-year veteran of the police force, was struck in his vehicle while driving to work, after coming upon an active shooting scene among affiliated street posses, with undercover detectives also present in a nearby car, according to the Hampden District Attorney’s office. Social media trash talk and boasting led up the shootings, officials said.

What followed was mayhem, with the accused assailants fleeing across the city with police in pursuit, officials said. During a related crash, a pregnant woman and Massachusetts Department of Transportation workers were struck and injured.
