From Clam to burgers: MassLive’s must-visit roadside eats for spring 2025

With Spring around the corner, favorite roadside food shacks will reopen for customers.

MassLive staff’s recommended favorites, along with the feedback from MassLive’s social media followers, were used to create the list.

See the list below of seasonal food shacks that are already open or will open soon.

Roger's Place in Chicopee

1016 Chicopee St. in Chicopee

Roger’s Place in Chicopee has been a staple in the area for the last 26 years. Its popularity soared in the past few years thanks to its enormous dessert items.

Currently, the business is open from 12 to 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Come the spring, the business will stay open until 9 p.m. and in the summer, until 10 p.m.

25 Front St. in Salem

The Lobster Shanty is a classic eatery and bar serving up New England lobster rolls as well as Connecticut-style rolls and its famous lobster martini.

The Shanty also features live music on weekends.

The business is closed but will reopen for the season from April 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026.

When it reopens in April, shoulder season hours will be in effect. The Shanty will be open at 12 p.m. Friday through Sunday and at 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, the website says.

121 E Main St.

Howard’s Drive-In describes itself as a “A classic American drive-in restaurant,” selling ice cream, sandwiches, burgers, clam strips and more.

The business will reopen on March 28, according to its Facebook page.

It also has its hours listed as 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.

Captain Jack’s Roadside Shack opens new food truck in Easthampton

Captain Jack’s Roadside Shack has a new food truck in front of River Valley Co-op.

232 Northampton St.

Captain Jack’s Roadside Shack is an independently owned and operated drive-in.

The business is open from 1:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

3260 Main St.

Cobies serves fried clams, fried seafood, burgers, hot dogs, french fries and ice cream to its seasonal customers.

It is open May 1 to mid-September and is located in Brewster.

George's Coney Island Hot Dogs

George’s Coney Island Hot Dogs in Worcester is having its neon sign of more than 80 years restored.Adam Bass

158 Southbridge St.

For over 100 years, Coney Island has served hot dogs to the Worcester community, decorated with an old-fashioned jukebox and historic wooden booths.

The food joint’s regular hours are 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday and 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

1189 Park St.

This drive-in offers inexpensive food for takeaway or to enjoy on the property, including a $3.50 hamburger, according to its website.

91 Commercial St.

Mac’s Shack in Wellfleet is a local seafood favorite,

It will be open for indoor and outdoor dining and takeout from April through October, according to its website.

Tom’s Famous Hot Dog & Grill in Whately is a local landmark known for its long hot dogs, fries, grinders, Polish specialties and more.

The business is open year-round from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

205 Myricks St.

Guests can travel back in time at Star Drive-In, where, in addition to food, 1960-era fun is on the menu, according to its website.

Aside from its ice cream, burgers and seafood, the business hosts car shows, Jeep nights, vintage bike shows, Toys for Tots events and holiday activities.

Star Drive-In is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
