SPRINGFIELD — A former Marine from Western Massachusetts pleaded guilty this week to fraudulently filing for a Purple Heart Medal — reserved for those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military.
Paul John Herbert, 54, of Shelburne Falls, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of making false statements, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Herbert was indicted by a federal grand jury in September. According to court records, Herbert submitted false statements, starting Oct. 13, 2010, about being wounded by a roadside bomb.
