Former Northeastern admissions counselor sentenced for having child sex abuse material

A 36-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday for receiving child sexual abuse material through Zoom chat rooms, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley said.

Beau Christopher Benson, of Dorchester, who worked as an admissions counselor at Northeastern University, pleased guilty to a single charge of receipt of child pornography in March 2024. After his prison sentence, Benson will serve five years of supervised release, Foley’s office said.

In April 2023, law enforcement learned Benson participated in Zoom video chat rooms used to share and view child sexual abuse materials. Benson recorded those chat rooms, which featured videos of child sexual abuse and conversations about the materials, and saved them to his social media, Foley’s office said.

Investigators found 15 video files depicting child sexual abuse saved to Benson’s Dropbox account. He also uploaded two files containing child sexual abuse materials to the file-storage service. Those files depicted children believed to be about 2 to 4, Foley’s office said.
