A former inmate from New Bedford faces drug trafficking charges after authorities say he was part of a scheme to smuggle cocaine into the Dartmouth jail.
Raymond Molina-Caraballo, 28, was charged with trafficking a Class B substance, possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, and delivering drugs or articles to a prisoner following his arrest last month.
The Bristol County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit began investigating after learning that Molina-Caraballo, who had outstanding warrants, intended to intentionally surrender to authorities to smuggle drugs into the jail.
On August 25, Molina-Caraballo appeared at New Bedford District Court on his warrants and was ordered held by a judge to be transported to the Dartmouth Jail. Investigators coordinated with transportation and booking staff to ensure he received a thorough search upon his arrival from court.
The search uncovered a large amount of suspected cocaine and crack cocaine. Investigators seized more than 11 grams of suspected crack cocaine and nearly 26 grams of suspected powdered cocaine.
“People introducing contraband into the jail, including drugs, do not appreciate or care about the disruption and at times harm that contraband causes,” Sheriff Paul Heroux said. “Contraband is a challenge common to all correctional facilities in the country; it threatens the safety of staff and inmates.”
Molina-Caraballo was arraigned at New Bedford District Court on Friday, Sept. 26, and is currently being held at the Bristol County Jail in Dartmouth.
