Former Celtics guard traded to Wizards in draft-day deal (report)

Former Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon is onto his next stop in his NBA career, which will be his fourth team in the last four seasons. The veteran guard has been dealt from the Trail Blazers to the Wizards, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, as part of a draft-day deal Wednesday.

Deni Avdija is headed to Portland in the deal. The Wizards will receive Brogdon, the No. 14 pick in the 2024 draft and a 2029 pick, Wojnarowski reported. The 2024 NBA Draft opens at 8 p.m. Wednesday, so the deals are already starting to flow right before the picks start rolling in.

Brogdon spent the 2022-23 season with the Celtics, putting together a successful campaign coming off the bench. He was rewarded as the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year as the veteran sacrificed for the better of the team. Brogdon chose the Celtics over other options for the chance at a ring back then.

There was some friction near the end of his Celtics tenure. Brogdon was originally supposed to go to the Clippers as part of a three-way deal that would’ve netted Kristaps Porzingis for the Celtics. But that deal fell through because the Clippers were worried about Brogdon’s medical status coming off an injury that slowed him down in the 2023 East Finals against the Heat.

But the C’s ended up dealing Brogdon anyway just days before training camp in the Jrue Holiday deal. The Blazers elected to keep Brogdon through the entire 2023-24 season, though Brogdon only ended up playing in 39 games (25 starts) due to injury. Now, he’s onto his next step as part of another rebuilding team in the Wizards for now, though perhaps he gets dealt later this summer to a guard-needy team.
