Former basketball star Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir brings message of resilience to Springfield girls

When Springfield native Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, now 34, was on her way to becoming the Bay State’s all-time leading scorer in women’s high school basketball, she faced opposition and hatred.

The Muslim teen at the time became famous for wearing her hijab while playing for the New Leadership Charter School in the city. It was a symbol of her faith, but fans ridiculed her for wearing the traditional scarf.
